Can You Clean Up House Mold on Your Own?

Discovering house mold in your East Weymouth, MA, dwelling can be alarming. Depending on the situation, there are different ways to go about addressing it. So what type of problem do you have?

Assess the Situation

Before deciding if this is a project you can tackle yourself, you should determine the extent of the mold growth. If the patch is less than 10 square feet, it is likely you can handle it yourself. For an area larger than that, the usual recommendation is to seek professional help. You will also need a mold remediation service if you have found mold in your HVAC system or if the damage was caused by contaminated water, such as sewage.

Protect Yourself

You should avoid exposing yourself to house mold as much as possible. Mold spores are airborne, so you will need to wear personal protective equipment to prevent breathing in spores or getting them on your skin. Some common examples of equipment include:

  • An N-95 respirator, usually available at many hardware stores or online
  • Gloves that extend to at least the middle of the forearm
  • Goggles that do not have ventilation holes

Get To Cleaning

First, you should address the plumbing issue or source of moisture that has caused the mold damage so that you are able to dry out the area. Once it is as dry as possible, you can use detergent and water to scrub the mold off. However, if the mold is not on a hard surface but rather on something porous like ceiling tiles or carpet, you will probably have to throw the material away. Once all the mold is gone, you can repaint or recaulk if necessary but be sure to never paint over mold.
House mold can worsen if left alone, so you should take action as soon as you find it in your home. If you know the proper steps, it is not a cause for panic.
